Can I Hire a Concrete Pump Without a Concreter?

Yes. You can hire the pump and operator on its own, the operator runs the pump and places the concrete, but they don’t finish it. You’ll still need a concreter (or a capable crew) on site to screed, level and finish the slab as it comes out. If you don’t have one, we can sort the crew for you so the whole pour is covered in one booking.

Here’s how it works and what you’re responsible for.

What does the pump operator actually do?

The operator brings the pump, sets it up, and moves the concrete from the truck to where it needs to go. On a line pump they run the hose to the pour point; on a boom pump they drive the end hose by remote and place the concrete from above. They control the flow so your crew gets a steady, workable supply.

What the operator doesn’t do is the finishing. Spreading, screeding, levelling, edging and floating the slab is the concreter’s job. The pump gets the concrete there fast and clean, and the concreter turns it into a finished slab. That split is normal: pump hire and concreting are two different jobs.

You can see what each pump is built for on our line pump hire, boom pump hire and small concrete pump hire pages.

Do I need a concreter, or can I do the finishing myself?

It depends on the job and how confident you are with concrete. Owner-builders pour their own footings, shed slabs and paths all the time, so if you’ve done it before and you’ve got enough hands, hiring the pump on its own is straightforward. Concrete goes off on its own timeline, so the work is in getting it placed, screeded and floated before it sets.

Be honest with yourself about the pour, though. A small footing is one thing. A large house slab or a finished driveway is a lot of concrete to handle at once, and once it’s down, the clock’s running. If you’re not sure you can keep up, or you want a proper finish, get an experienced concreter on the job. A pour that goes off half-finished is an expensive mistake to fix.

Can Hunter supply the concreting crew too?

Yes. If you don’t have a concreter, we can arrange one as part of the booking. That way you make one call, and the pump and the crew turn up on the same day, ready to work together. It saves you chasing two separate trades and trying to line up their schedules yourself.

Tell us when you book whether you’ve got your own crew or you need us to sort one. Either way works. Plenty of builders and concreters book the pump on its own because they’ve got their finishing covered; plenty of owner-builders ask us to bring the crew so it’s all handled. Just let us know which one you are.

What do I need to organise before the pour?

A few things have to be sorted before pour day, whether or not you’ve got your own crew. The biggest one is the concrete itself. In most cases you order it from the concrete supplier and they deliver it in the agro truck on the day; we pump what they deliver. Get the mix and the volume right with your supplier (and your engineer if it’s a structural pour).

Before the day, you’ll want:

  • Concrete ordered from your supplier, with the right mix and volume
  • The site formed up and ready: formwork, reo and prep done
  • Clear access for the truck to park within reach of the pour
  • Enough labour on hand to place and finish the concrete
  • A water source and somewhere to wash out

If you’re not sure about any of that, ask when you book. We’d rather talk it through beforehand than have something hold up the pour on the day.

FAQ

Can I hire a concrete pump without a concreter?

Yes. You can hire the pump and operator on their own, so the operator places the concrete, and your crew handles the finishing. This is common for builders and concreters who’ve already got their own team, and for experienced owner-builders pouring footings, shed slabs or paths. The one thing to be clear on is that the operator doesn’t finish the slab: screeding, levelling and floating is the concreter’s job. So you do need someone on site who can finish the concrete as it comes out. If you don’t have a crew, we can arrange one as part of the booking so the whole pour is covered in one call. Just tell us when you book whether you’re bringing your own team or you need us to sort one.

Does the pump operator finish the concrete?

No. The operator’s job is to run the pump and place the concrete where it needs to go, controlling the flow so your crew gets a steady, workable supply. The finishing work, spreading, screeding, levelling, edging and floating the slab, is the concreter’s job, not the operator’s. These are two separate trades that work together on the day: the pump gets the concrete there fast and clean, and the concreter turns it into a finished slab. If you’re hiring the pump on its own, make sure you’ve got someone on site who can finish the concrete before it sets. If you haven’t, ask us to arrange a concreting crew when you book.

Can an owner-builder hire a concrete pump?

Yes. Owner-builders hire concrete pumps regularly for footings, shed slabs, paths and small house slabs across Newcastle, Maitland and the Hunter. The pump and operator come to your site, place the concrete where you need it, and you (or your crew) do the finishing. The honest advice is to match the job to your experience: a footing or a small slab is manageable for a capable owner-builder, but a large slab or a driveway you want finished properly is a lot of concrete to handle against the clock. If you’ve got the hands and the know-how, hire the pump on its own. If you’re not confident on the finishing, ask us to bring a concreting crew so it’s all handled in one booking.

Do I need to organise my own concrete as well?

In most cases, yes. You order the concrete from your concrete supplier and they deliver it in the truck on pour day, and we pump what they deliver. That means getting the mix and the volume right with the supplier (and your engineer, if it’s a structural pour) before the day. Beyond the concrete itself, you’ll need the site formed up and prepped, clear access for the truck to park within reach, enough labour to place and finish, and a water source for washout. If you’re unsure about any of it, raise it when you book. We’d rather sort it beforehand than have it hold up the pour. And if you’d like the concreting crew arranged too, let us know and we’ll cover that in the booking.

Is it cheaper to hire just the pump?

Hiring the pump on its own is one cost; adding a concreting crew is a separate cost on top. So pump-only is the smaller number, but only worth it if you’ve genuinely got the labour to place and finish the concrete yourself. If you’d have to scramble for help on the day, or the slab risks going off before it’s finished, the saving disappears fast. Pricing on any pump hire depends on the pump size, the pour volume, the site access and how long the job takes, so the right way to compare is to get a quote for your actual job, pump only, or pump plus crew. Call us with your details and we’ll give you both so you can decide.
