What a small concrete pump is good for

Small pumps shine on the everyday domestic pours where space is the problem, not volume. Common jobs include:

• Backyard slabs: shed slabs, granny flat and studio bases, and extensions behind an existing house.
• Paths and footpaths: side access strips down the boundary where a wheelbarrow run would take hours.
• Driveways: especially where the fall, a gate or a garden bed stops the truck getting to the far end.
• Pool surrounds: coping and paving bands where the pool is already in and access is tight.
• House slabs on tight blocks: newer subdivisions where the setbacks leave no room to move.
• Repours and infill: garage floors, patios, alfresco areas and small commercial fit-outs.

The point of a pump is placement. Instead of barrowing heavy concrete across a yard and racing the clock before it goes off, the pump delivers it to the formwork steadily, so your crew can stay on the screed and the finish instead of on the barrow.

Is a small pump right for your pour?

Not every job needs the same machine. Here is the plain version of how the three options compare, so you can book the right one the first time.

• Choose a small concrete pump when the site is tight, the volume is modest, and the main challenge is getting the hose around corners, through a gateway or down the side of a house at ground level. This is the bread-and-butter domestic option.
• Choose a line pump when you need more reach along the ground or the job is bigger, but a large truck-mounted boom still can’t fit or isn’t warranted. A line pump pushes concrete through a longer run of hose, which suits jobs where the truck has to sit well back from the pour but the concrete only needs to travel across reasonably level ground.
• Choose a boom pump when you need high volume placed quickly, or you need to reach up and over an obstacle, such as pouring a suspended slab, a first floor, or a pour on the far side of a building or pool. The boom is a folding arm on the truck that lifts the line up and across, so you are not limited to what a ground-level hose can reach.
